Saint-Gobain R&D Director – CertainTeed Architectural Solutions in Malvern, Pennsylvania
The Director of R&D for Architectural Solutions is a member of the Architectural Solutions business leadership team, overseeing R&D and technical activities in support of business revenue, profitability, and growth. The Director is closely involved in the planning of group’s strategy, specific to product and technology development, and the planning and execution of capital engineering projects associated with R&D investments.
The Director of R&D leads and manages R&D activities for architectural ceiling panels and suspension systems including: design and engineering of new products and systems, improvements and cost reductions of existing products, and provides technical support to Product Management, Sales, Operations, and Quality. The Director will supervise a R&D group specific to the core product lines of Architectural Solutions and leverage Saint-Gobain's broad technical, design, and innovation competencies to support technical programs. The Director ensures the R&D group delivers new product and process technologies in-line with the business strategic goals, timelines, and budgets.
The Director is responsible for maintaining relationships and promoting the company within industry technical organizations and maintaining relationships across the Saint-Gobain R&D Community.
Essential Function and Responsibilities:
Member of Architectural Solutions Leadership team for new product development planning and execution. Reports, meetings, and integration of R&D's efforts to support business goals and new product development initiatives. Integrates the work of R&D with all key business functions including Product Management, Sales, Operations, and Quality.
Managing and directing the R&D organization: Builds a strong technical capability in line with business needs. Establishes budgets and priorities, oversees core product development and testing activities, clearly communicates goals and objectives, develops and approves project plans, integrates diverse projects and resources, monitors progress. Occasionally provides personal technical expertise to projects and oversees large R&D initiatives.
Integration with plants, suppliers, customers, field offices, to support group product and process development, quality efforts
Engages with the Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed R&D community to support technical programs through strong collaboration.
A M.S. degree in engineering and design or material science plus 10+ years’ experience in research and product development, or a PhD with 7+ years’ experience preferred.
Additional training and experience in advanced engineering and product design, project management, budgeting/financial preferred plus a strong aptitude for design.
Strong analysis skills with experience in product design and development, technical resource planning, project team organization, and project management required.
Demonstrated technical judgement/accomplishments, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills required.
Strong business acumen with experience understanding the financial implications of new product and technology development and quality decisions is preferred.
Understands the use of science, technology, and design as a competitive differentiator, specifically driving the creative process and ideation funnel.
Knowledge of the processes used to create, document and pursue formalized intellectual property required.
Advocate for safe and responsible laboratory practices required.
Prior people management, time management, and collaborations skills required.
