EHS Engineering Specialist

Position Description

Job Summary

What's the job?

The EHS Engineer will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, protecting the environment, and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in engineering principles and a passion for promoting a culture of safety within the organization.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace, including physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards

  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks and improve workplace safety, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Design and review engineering controls and safety systems to minimize environmental impact and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to internal stakeholders on EHS-related matters, including equipment design, process safety, and emergency response

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate EHS considerations into the design, construction, and modification of facilities and processes

  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors to promote awareness and compliance with safety protocols

  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and incident investigations to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed

  • Stay abreast of regulatory developments and industry best practices related to EHS and ensure that company policies and procedures remain up-to-date and compliant

  • Prepare and maintain documentation, reports, and records related to EHS activities, including permits, licenses, training records, and incident reports

Required Qualifications

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field is required.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (preferably Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering) or a related field, preferred

  • 3-5 years experience in Manufacturing or industrial environment

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, OSHA, DOT) and experience with regulatory compliance and permitting processes

  • Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, root cause analysis, and incident investigations

  • Familiarity with industry standards and best practices related to process safety, industrial hygiene, hazardous materials management, and emergency response

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and EHS management software systems

Licenses and Certifications

  • Professional Certification - Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, preferred

Communication and Influencing Skills

  • EHS will need to communicate safety policies, procedures, and expectations to employees at all levels of the organization. They must be able to articulate safety information clearly and effectively, whether it's during safety meetings, training sessions, or one-on-one conversations

  • Delivering engaging and informative presentations is often part of the EHS responsibilities, whether it's conducting safety training sessions, giving safety briefings, or presenting findings from safety audits. EHS Coordinators should be able to effectively organize and deliver presentations to capture the audience's attention and convey key safety messages

  • In the event of a safety incident or emergency, EHS must be able to communicate quickly, clearly, and calmly to provide guidance, instructions, and updates to employees, emergency responders, and other stakeholders. Crisis communication skills are essential for managing emergencies effectively and minimizing the impact on personnel and the environment

  • Conflict may arise when addressing safety issues or implementing safety policies within an organization. EHS should possess conflict resolution skills to address disagreements, negotiate solutions, and resolve conflicts in a constructive and collaborative manner

  • Written communication skills are necessary for documenting safety procedures, incident reports, inspection findings, and other EHS-related documentation. EHS should be able to write clearly, concisely, and accurately to ensure that safety information is communicated effectively and comprehensively

  • Building positive relationships and collaborating with colleagues, managers, and other stakeholders is essential for success in an EHS role. Strong interpersonal skills are needed to navigate organizational dynamics, influence behavior change, and promote a culture of safety throughout the organization

Problem-Solving

  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA) : This approach aims to identify the underlying cause of a problem rather than just addressing its symptoms. Techniques such as the 5 Whys or fishbone diagrams (Ishikawa diagrams) are often used to systematically trace back to the root cause of issues

  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) : FMEA is a systematic method for evaluating and prioritizing potential failure modes within a process or system, along with their potential effects. It helps teams proactively identify and mitigate risks before they occur
