Driller/Blaster Lead
Position Description
Job Summary
POSITION SUMMARY
The Blaster Lead handles and transports all explosives needed to load blast holes in the quarry and oversees blasting crew work. Once the shot is loaded, the blaster connects the detonators to the appropriate system, clears the pit, and initiates the blast. The blaster is then required to perform a post-shot inspection and give the “ok” before any work can resume in the blast area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Order and receive all explosives into inventory
Loads explosives into blasting truck
Sets up blast warning signage
Makes up primers, lays out delays and loads blast holes with ANFO
Connects loaded blast holes with light line and readies blast rounds for detonation
Clears the quarry in preparation for blasting
Initiates blast detonation
Safety inspection of the quarry after blasting and giving the “all clear”
Complete SMAT & EMAT audit
Keep and maintain an accurate inventory of all explosives
Daily inspections of cap houses, and ANFO trailer
Complete and maintain proper paperwork as needed for daily and month-end reports
Manages blasting crew work as directed by the production supervisor
Must be willing to follow and understand the Code of Ethics and Business Conduct Guidelines for North America.
Participate in monthly mine plan meetings and perform weekly/daily mine plan
Daily update daily shot locations on the plan map.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates mine heavy equipment; fuel truck, haul truck, FEL, dozers, loaders, and drills
Maintains housekeeping for blasting truck.
Conducts daily blast inspections
Must be first-aid trained and able to provide support and direction should an upset condition arise.
Works under the direction of Mine Production Supervisor
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as needed and/or requested by management or shift lead
General cleanup and manual labor as required
Assist in proper AM on all drilling/blasting-related equipment
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in a mining environment with limited HVAC, rock, and mud floors, and exposure to industrial noise, dust, chemicals, extreme heat, and extreme cold. May require long hours, and weekend and holiday work. 8-hour shifts, (Mon-Fri) and occasionally on weekends as needed
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED
High school diploma or equivalent
Current blasting certification
Current MSHA certification
Self-motivated
Proficient computer skills
Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be flexible to adapt to changing and varying work requirements.
Must have respect for others and be able to interact with others effectively.
Display Integrity and respect for the law

PREFERED OR DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
5+ year’s previous blasting experience
Demonstrate ability and experience with heavy mobile equipment and explosives
Responsible person with ATF (no criminal record)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job includes tasks that require walking, bending, twisting, stooping, gripping, shoveling, stair and ladder climbing, navigating rough terrain, and lifting up to 75lbs. The job may require long periods of sitting, walking, standing, working on a computer, or engaging in verbal conversation. Must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment necessary to comply with government and company safety standards whenever engineered methods of reducing hazards or physical requirements cannot be reasonably accommodated.
