Saint-Gobain General Manager in Norcross, Georgia

Reporting to the GM CertainTeed Specialties and VP Commercial Markets, the General Manager for Metal Ceilings is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of sales, marketing, operations, engineering, project management, customer service, and product development for the metal ceilings business. In addition, the role is responsible for building and sustaining a high performing management team and workplace and developing and implementing profitable growth strategies for the business.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Day-to-day management of the metal ceilings business including full P&L responsibility (50%)

  • Promote and manage a safety culture and actively support environment and health programs

  • Work with sales management to oversee independent rep network and sustain demand for our products. Build relationships with all reps and ensure sales team is supporting and challenging the sales network.

  • Work with sales and project teams to ensure product pricing is appropriate and profitable. Set the appropriate structure and become involved in specific pricing decisions as needed.

  • Become involved in large jobs as appropriate

  • Develop and maintain strong vendor and partner relationships to enable the company to succeed and grow without self-performing all aspects of production

  • Work with operations leadership to establish high performing manufacturing and support capabilities (purchasing, supply chain, etc.), utilizing Continuous Improvement tools, identifying and managing against appropriate KPIs (lead time, yield, productivity, cost, quality, etc.) and identifying and executing high returning capital projects

  • Work with human resources management to create and sustain a high performing and healthy work environment and attract and retain talented employees

  • Work with finance and accounting to ensure the appropriate financial measures and KPIs are reliably tracked and that the overall management team is familiar with the economic and financial drivers of the business and how to impact

  • Manage the entire business and P&L against a budget while investing for growth

  • Serve as the face of the metals business to the external market via building strong relationships with architects & contractor and inside the company

  • Work tirelessly to create a culture of fairness, positivity, but also accountability throughout the business (plant floor through management)

  • Maintain & foster innovative & agile spirit of the business

Strategic, long-term leadership of the metal ceilings business (35%)

  • Develop mid-term and long range strategic plans for the metal business

  • Develop and sustain a product management strategy

  • Work with CertainTeed, Saint-Gobain, and local sales and technical resources to develop new products with industry-leading speed-to-market

  • Build aggressive but economically responsible capital expenditure plans and execute cap ex projects reliably. Expand and improve capabilities to improve cost structure, improve quality, and broaden product offering

Contribution to the improved performance and long-term growth of CertainTeed Specialties, CertainTeed Ceilings, and CertainTeed overall (15%)

  • Work with the leader of CertainTeed Specialties and peer GMs to drive growth across the portfolio including through cross-location synergies (best practices with Decoustics, etc.), portfolio, sales relationships, and industry relationships

  • Devise strategies and tactics that translate metal opportunities and competitive advantages into profitable growth for CertainTeed Ceilings and CertainTeed overall (likely through work with the Commercial Markets team)

  • Foster an environment of collaboration between the metal team and the other Specialties, Ceilings, and CertainTeed businesses

Complexity of RoleThe business sells through external, independent rep agencies so the degree of “control” over the sales team is different than typical company-employed sales teams.

The metal business sells directly to the installer which presents some challenges from a credit management perspective as the installers are typically not large contractors.

There is a long learning curve for new hires as there is significant industry specific knowledge required, particularly for project managers and designers, which are an integral part of the business.

Education Level

  • Bachelor's Degree Business, engineering, finance

  • Master's Degree (Preferred)

    Work Experience

  • 10 - 15+ years experience

    Practical/Technical Knowledge

  • Significant people management experience

  • Proven knowledge of architectural and / or custom products

  • Ability to work effectively and influence senior management and business teams

  • Proven track record as an effective, results-oriented manager. Must have strong drive to implement plans and strategies.

  • Previous P&L experience

  • Customer orientation - must understand architectural specification process

  • Prior management of a unionized work force in a plus (Preferred)

  • Knowledge of building materials industry (Preferred)
