Saint-Gobain Sr. Research Engineer I in Watervliet, New York
Saint-Gobain Coated Abrasives is looking for a talented Senior Research Engineer to join our R&D group at Watervliet, NY. The role will focus on new product development, technology transfer and scale-up, and product and process improvement. We are looking for individuals with creativity, passion, motivation as well as exceptional communication, organization, time management skills, and technical and problem solving skills.The candidate must be able to manage a project team, train other people, and respect deadlines to get things done in a fast paced research and development environment tightly aligned with a manufacturing enviornment. Travels in US (up to 20%) are required for customer visits, vendor visits, and technical meetings.
The responsibility will include exploration and development of organic coating material and formulation; transfer and scale up new technology; and integration of end product with targeted application. S/he will lead product development projects from concept to manufacturing and product launch.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans project assignments and identifies key activities, with priorities provided by manager.
Independently conducts experimental plans, supports plant trials, and is comfortable with process documentation and understanding.
Strong documentation skills.
Ability to interact with a variety of colleagues including plant operators to upper management from diverse backgrounds.
Strong focus on process improvements, documentation and support to industrial team as part of center of excellence.
Identifies available resources (equipment and people) and provides accurate timelines with support of manager.
Develops hypotheses, conclusions, and next steps.
Makes recommendations on process and R&D activities.
May provide technical direction to technicians.
Accurately communicates results to management (written and oral).
This position requires a seasoned knowledge of principles and theories of the discipline and their application that normally might be acquired through a Ph.D. degree in related discipline. Alternatively, the level of technical knowledge associated with a Master’s Degree and minimum three years’ experience or a Bachelor’s Degree with minimum 7 years’ experience in R&D or manufacturing technology might be appropriate.
Previous research or industrial experience in polymeric liquid coating formulation and processing.
Knowledge in industrial web coating, winding, drying and curing process.
Previous experience in woven textile handling, coating, and processing will be a plus.
Strong commitment to teamwork with excellent verbal and written communication skills and have the ability to work well on a large Research and Development team.
Demonstrated ability to design and direct technician run experiments to develop and support pilot scale processes and ensure correlation of pilot processes into full scale manufacturing processes.
A creative problem-solving with a hands-on approach to product development.
Strong leadership and influencing skills to facilitate projects involving multiple functional teams and geographic locations.
Experience and training with the proper and safe handling of chemicals and operation of the aforementioned equipment.
Must be highly motivated and able to work under very limited guidance with the utmost precision and care.
