Saint-Gobain Fireman (Production) in Worcester, Massachusetts


Set up, operate, and tend heating equipment, such as heat-treating kilns, flame-hardening machines, induction machines, and vacuum equipment to bake, fire, temper, harden, or heat-treat greenware, abrasive or bonded materials.


  • This is a backup position. Therefore, default shift is M-F, 1st shift hours with ability to flex to 12-hour shift when someone is absent for sickness or vacation.

  • Work rotating 12-hour shifts (4 on, 4 off), including nights, holidays and weekends.

  • Lift up to 50 lbs. is occasionally required.

  • Operate and control all kilns to preheat, bake or fire greenware products. Follow start and stop procedures for kilns.

  • Operate equipment including tunnel kilns, periodic kilns, electric fired kilns, compressor tanks, fiber-bed system, fork truck, hand truck, kiln dog, transfer car, hydraulic pusher system, calibration equipment, manometers, various hand tools, computer systems and software, and controllers. Load and unload of tunnel cars to move product into and out of kilns.

  • Raise and lower kilns and car transfer system including docking of the larger Bickley cars and smaller pulse kiln cars.

  • Observe color of fires and reactions of pyrometric cones to increases in temperatures in kiln and read gauges and automatic recording instruments to verify specified temperatures in kiln.

  • Pull loaded kiln car from drier, open preheater doors, and push kiln car into preheater, using car puller or transfer car. Close preheater doors and start mechanism that pushes car through preheater.

  • Pull loaded kiln cars from preheating chamber, open tunnel kiln doors, and start mechanism that pushes string of cars through kiln. Remove cars from tunnel kiln and move them to sorting area, using transfer car.

  • Monitor all gauges and charts in control room. Operate control systems. Collect kiln and system data, record data in logs.

  • Operate computer and Office software including spreadsheets andatabases to plot histories for burn cycles, change recipes, data recording, and backup data on shared drives.

Supports World Class Manufacturing activities including autonomous work teams.

EDUCATION REQUIRED: HS Diploma or equivalent work experience. Associates degree and basic mechanical and plumbing knowledge helpful.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Experience with fork truck and hand truck. Opacity certification for EPA readings and compliance. Knowledge of DEP reporting procedures. Training time is one year before working independently.
